Abstract
The Department of Wood and Paper Science at the University of Minnesota has changed its name to the Department of Bio-based Products. Department curricula and programs have also changed in accordance to a new and broader vision of industrial needs and career opportunities. Changes were driven by increasing concern globally about long term petroleum supplies, shifting realities in the forest products industries nationally and globally, rising interest in bio-energy and bio-chemicals, and by rising expectations for all programs within the university. The department was able to maintain close ties to many companies, which made bio-based products.
