Abstract
The Home Heating Index (HHI) - an energy rating system for residences which has been used in Iowa since 1981 - is a performance-based measure of the heating energy efficiency of homes, typically ranging from about 2 for very efficient homes to over 20 for some very inefficient dwellings. In 1985 it has come into use in two state programs: the Solar Energy Bank program and the state building code. The HHI standard in the building code is to be the average HHI of recently completed new homes, as determined by a survey carried out by the Iowa Energy Policy Council.
